Starting a Manga Club

Filed under: Graphic Novelist and Artists,Libraries,Uncategorized — Tyler Rousseau @ 2:25 pm

If you want to draw in the YA community then your best bet is a Manga-club.  Fortunately, you don't have to know a ton about the genre (but it doesn't hurt to know something) as there are some good free resources to help you along.

If you unsure where to start check out Tokyopop's Guide for Librarians.  There is good advice on the selection process as well as the titles they offer (which is absolutely HUGE!).  You can also sign up for a free Manga magazine here.

Chances are, your group will want to watch some films as well and, fortunately, there are promoters who will give you free films. Operation Anime and Anime Advocateswill send you a free DVD each month to show with your Manga Club.  You do not have to pay royalties for the viewings.  Sometimes, they will send previews with the DVD that they ask the viewers to fill our a sheet to rate the previews, which is extraordinarily little hassle for free films.

If you need some ideas for what to do on non-movie days.  Try the following

-Have club members draw a manga-style self portrait

-Have a book swap day

-Try creating storyline ideas

-Making their own book/series (even handier if you have Comic Book Creator)

-Have a dress up day

-Trying a role playing of characters
